Security: Level 3 US State Dept country status due to Amhara PG in Northern Ethiopia. In Addis Ababa, the situation is currently stable. However, the country recently was involved in a civil war and there is ongoing tension and violence in regions outside of the capital.  No involvement in capital AA and life continues as usual.  Recommended to not stay for out-of-the-city tourism.

MCM Comprehensive Specialized Hospital – This is a tertiary care center, mission hospital in Addis Ababa affiliated with a Christian medical school. Most major specialties are available. There are Internal Medicine, Radiology, General Surgery, and OB/GYN residencies in the hospital, and occasionally residents from other specialties will do some rotations at MCM (neurosurgery, ortho, etc).  Myungsung International Development is a ministry organization associated with Myungsung Presbyterian Church in Seoul, Korea. They established the hospital over 20 years ago in Addis Ababa and it has since grown into a premier medical center within the country. A medical school, Myungsung Medical College, was started in 2012 and has graduated numerous classes since 2018.
  1. Purpose:  Family Medicine physicians and physical therapists. Family Medicine will focus on teaching physical exam skills and mentoring in the primary care clinic. The PT focus will be on musculoskeletal injuries and non-surgical therapies. The target learners will include medical students, residents and general practice MDs.  Hosts are very engaged and the team leader has close relationships with them due to continued visits.  
  2. Other Teaching Topics desired: Acute Trauma Care for residents staffing their newly opened trauma unit, OR nursing and Ortho Surgery with emphasis on joint replacement.
  3. Travel suggestions:  Recommend non-stop flights from Toronto, Dulles, Chicago, and Atlanta on Ethiopian Airlines or Emirates.  Avoid Turkish Air.
  4. VISA details: must be obtained prior to boarding the flight in the US as a printed copy will be reviewed upon checking in luggage.  ONLY obtain the eVISA on team-leader provided website to avoid scam websites.  VISA cost: $70 for 30-day tourist VISA.
  5. Vaccinations: CDC website lists Ethiopia as high-risk Measles country.  An adult Polio vaccine also recommended by CDC.  Please make sure your vaccinations are up to date.  Jan 2025 malaria outbreak in all 14 regions was reported. Yellow Fever & Typhoid required.
  6. Language: teaching language is English, and Amharic interpreters will be provided if needed.
  7. Lodging info: Hospital housing with single occupancy rooms + bathrooms.  AC not needed due to high altitude.  Large, gated, guarded hospital compound at MCM.
  8. In country Transport: Hospital van from the airport with Dr. Robert Labutta who will meet you at the airport as he will already be in-country.  Taxis other in AA travel
  9. Food: Hospital cafeteria with mixed cuisine – Western + Ethiopian
